gentle hum gentlehum.net search main menu skip to primary content skip to secondary content home about contact post navigation ← older posts the color purple posted on may 5, 2016 by mike vork 254 the property is nondescript and a chain link fence surrounds it. sitting about 30 minutes southwest of downtown minneapolis in the suburb of chanhassen, there is nothing particularly special about the property or its buildings and there is no obvious hint of celebrity. many people have probably driven past it on highway 5 and thought it was an industrial park of some kind. in a way, i suppose it is. for this is paisley park, the home and recording studio of one of the most prolific musical talents ever, the man known simply as prince. it’s a beautiful sunday morning, ten days after prince died unexpectedly inside a paisley park elevator. today the chain link fence is covered in prince tributes: floral arrangements, artwork, messages from fans around the world, purple balloons, and even several boxes of pancake batter (he famously served his guests pancakes after all-night dance parties). throngs of people have made the pilgrimage to pay their respects. some are laughing, some are crying, and some are sharing stories. and truth be told, i have no idea why i’m here. it just seems a little out of character. most celebrities hold no appeal for me and i was never really a big prince fan. of course, his hit songs were familiar and i liked some of them and didn’t really like others. i never attended a prince concert. as a junior at the university of minnesota in 1983, some friends invited me to see him perform at a benefit concert at first avenue, the downtown club where much of his movie “purple rain” was filmed. we didn’t know it at the time but it was the night he recorded the film’s title song for the movie soundtrack. but because his music didn’t really resonate with me at the time, i chose not to attend. and at the time of his death, “purple rain” was the only prince album i’d ever owned. it was purchased on itunes about 25 years after its release. so what drew me to paisley park on this sunny sunday morning? part of the answer lies in the numerous tributes taking place around the world the last two weeks. i’ve viewed dozens of previously unseen performances, read stories of his philanthropy, and discovered intensely spiritual lyrics in lesser known prince songs, songs i’ve never heard on the radio. “beautiful, loved and blessed” has been particularly resonant: “when you found me i was just a piece of clay i was formless, you gave me a new name with the breath of life i now live abundantly all i needed was the potter’s hand and the blood on calvary” these have all increased my appreciation for the musician and the man. but what strikes me this morning is the crowd’s diversity. there are no age or color barriers at paisley park. probably no religious barriers either. no unkind words are being spoken. the mourners are all cordial and respectful. it has been the same even in very large gatherings in downtown minneapolis since prince’s passing. it is beautiful to see. but my presence here still puzzles me. when monday morning arrives, i happen upon a rolling stone article and another puzzle piece falls into place. in this article, prince’s friend van jones (see mr. nelson ) describes an interaction with prince about the death of trayvon martin: prince: “hold on a second: if a black kid wears a hoodie, you say he’s a thug, and if a white kid wears a hoodie, you say it’s mark zuckerberg. why is that?” mr. jones: “because of racism.” prince: “well, maybe. or maybe we just haven’t produced enough black mark zuckerbergs. why don’t we focus on that?” light bulbs went off and they started the #yeswecode movement to help black students break down barriers within the technology community. mr. jones further describes this as an example of prince’s special genius, his ability to see past the red (conservative) vs. blue (liberal) options which so bitterly divide much of our politics today. perhaps on a subconscious level i knew there was more to prince than the hit songs and the musical artistry. or maybe i needed to visit paisley park to discover his gifts for unifying people. either way, i once again find myself learning from his example, to combine red and blue options into purple solutions, to see the unity and the beauty of the color purple. posted in small things , uncategorized | tagged paisley park , prince , purple rain , small things , van jones | 254 replies mr. nelson posted on april 26, 2016 by mike vork 334 sad and perhaps a little adrift after leaving president obama’s administration, van jones received interesting advice from a friend: “go to jerusalem. stay there for two weeks and pray.” sounds like advice from a priest or rabbi rather than from one of the most famous musicians in the world, the man born prince rogers nelson and more commonly known as prince. mr. jones told this story on cnn (video here ) shortly after prince died unexpectedly at his paisley park home in minnesota last week. he further described how prince told him to write down the good things he’d like to do next and prince would help him accomplish these goals. this led mr. jones to tell his interviewers about the many charitable acts prince did behind the scenes, without public knowledge, without fanfare. this cnn interview, from someone who knew and loved prince, was an interesting contrast to a facebook comment i’d read earlier in the day: “how sad that prince gained the whole world yet lost his own soul.” my first reaction was to wonder how the commenter could possibly know prince’s spiritual state, especially at the time of his untimely death. did the commenter personally know prince? did he/she have inside knowledge of his spiritual well-being? or, perhaps it was because prince didn’t fit their particular image of a believer. what does a believer look like anyway? do we all need to act/dress/speak/live a certain way? admittedly, prince is a unique figure known as much for his flamboyance and eccentricities as for his immense, almost absurd, musical talents. after all, in most churches today, you don’t see men dressed in puffy blouses and purple suits. but does that mean he wasn’t a person of faith? while pondering these questions, i started to come across evidence pointing toward prince being a believer. as an admittedly casual prince fan, i’m familiar with most of his hit songs but had never heard “the cross” which includes the lyrics: “black day, stormy night no love, no hope in sight don’t cry, he is coming don’t die without knowing the cross ghettos to the left of us flowers to the right there’ll be bread for all of us if we can just bear the cross sweet song of salvation a pregnant mother sings she lives in starvation her children need all that she brings we all have our problems some big, some are small soon all of our problems will be taken by the cross” assuming those lyrics mean what i think they mean, prince apparently believed in the cross. he certainly painted a beautiful word picture of the cross’s redemptive power. and then i happened upon an interview he gave on mtv in 1985 (video here ) where he stated: “i pray every night. i don’t ask for much. i just say ‘thank you.’” stunningly beautiful to approach prayer with such a grateful posture. of course, anybody can say anything or wear any mask they wish. did prince indeed gain the whole world but lose his soul? that’s between him and god. i have no way of knowing, especially having never met the man. not even sure what i would have called him if i did: prince, your purple-ness, or perhaps mr. nelson. but what i can do, what we can all do, is learn from his words. for whatever else he accomplished, he dared to be who he was. he dared to be great. and he dared to be grateful. being grateful. that’s what i’ll think about the next time i’m standing underneath the purple rain. posted in small things | tagged charity , pri
